Millard Oakley Public Library News
March 22, 2024
The Millard Oakley Public Library has a full schedule of events for our community, starting with the solar eclipse on April 8.
While Overton County, and most of Tennessee, will only see a partial eclipse, we still want our citizens to be safe and protect their eyesight. The library does have solar eclipse glasses that we will be handing out for free. These will be limited to 10 per family.
On Tuesday, April 16, we will have a demonstration of our new Virtual Reality equipment. This equipment was given to us through a grant with MTSU and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The training on this equipment will give users an idea of what it is like to work in certain fields, such as diesel mechanics, hospitality and tourism, aviation maintenance, electrical construction, or health sciences. There are even opportunities to earn certification using this technology. Our library is one of six libraries in the state with this technology, and Tennessee is one of two states in the country that offer this at libraries.
The front corner of the library is almost ready to reveal. Our new statue and memorial plaque are installed, and the landscaping around the statue will be completed soon. FastSigns of Cookeville did an excellent job on our sign, and two local ceramic artists Beth Gunnells and Amanda Austin have completed some of the decorations for the area. Adam Smith is working on another element to be installed. Tracy Pennington has been working to install everything in time for our statue reveal on April 19. Everyone is invited to come to the unveiling at 4:30.
Other events at the library include Story Time every Thursday at 10:30, and our Crafters Club meeting every Tuesday at 9:00. A full calendar of events can be found on our website and our Facebook page.
